The Swiss SIG Group is an internationally operating manufacturer of beverage cartons and filling machines. With annual sales of €3.3 billion, SIG is the second-largest company in its sector. Among its seven production sites worldwide is Saalfelden, which also houses a sales and service center. Around 370 employees in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg produce SIG StandardBloc, SIG MidiBloc, SIG MidiFit, SIG MidiStyle, and SIG Dome products, supplying retail partners around the globe.
The Saalfelden plant has been continuously expanded since its opening in 1981. A major investment in the early 2020s increased production capacity from approximately 2.3 billion to 3 billion packages per year – partly through the installation of a new wide-die cutter that cuts beverage carton blanks from a printed and coated roll of cardboard. With a speed of 400 meters per minute, it is 50 percent faster than its predecessor. But Pagitsch GesmbH has also contributed to further increases in capacity and quality.
As a specialist in industrial flooring and coatings, the Tamsweg-based company Pagitsch was commissioned to renovate the floor in the production area. The initial challenge was to remove the old flooring and prepare the substrate for the new coating. This was achieved through thorough milling and chiseling work, as well as shot blasting. In this process, small steel balls are propelled at high speed onto the surface to remove the old flooring. A closed system immediately extracts the removed material, while the steel balls are cleaned and reused.
In a second step, Rheobeton, eight centimeters thick, was applied. This special type of concrete is characterized by exceptionally rapid and dimensionally stable curing – low shrinkage prevents cracking – as well as high strength. The Pagitsch team implemented both measures on an area of 800 square meters.
Pagitsch GesmbH has demonstrated its expertise in industrial floor renovation at SIG Saalfelden and on numerous other projects. Using a variety of methods, individually tailored to the floor's condition, material, and customer requirements, cracks can be repaired, and joints and surfaces can be extensively renewed. In every case, the floor is fully operational again after the renovation work is completed. Pagitsch is also known for its precise and punctual execution.
